Living close the railroad tracks has benefits--railroad spikes. Believe it or not, the alloys that make the steel spikes is the same to make a spike morph into a beautiful knife. Heated in a coal-fired forge and lovingly forged on an old anvil called Hoss, I hand shape each spike to a shape held deep inside the raw material. Every knife is different; every knife graceful. I polish each knife until I can see my sooty face in the knife then carefully temper the knife to a hardness befitting the spike once used to hold tracks decades ago. Imagine one of these on your mantle on a stand made from the wood of a railroad tie and rusty old barbed wire that tamed the west.
